Notes from UNAR

Catheter Care Skill Many students are focusing solely on the catheter tubing when completing the catheter care skill and overlooking Step 7- Uses cleansing wipe to clean area around the resident’s urinary meatus. Stress to your students that there are 2 areas of focus in this skill for cleansing; first the urinary meatus and then the catheter tubing. Many also seem to overlook doing anything with positioning the tubing and making sure the drainage bag is secured to a non-movable part of the bed.
Abuse Cases UNAR recently received notice to place the following 4 individuals on the Abuse Registry. They are all on the abuse registry for life unless their case is overturned in a court of law, the finding was made in error, they are found not guilty in a court of law, or the State of Utah is notified of their death. This information is public record and may be shared with potential employers. Medicare/Medicaid certified nursing facilities are prohibited from ever employing them.
Details of these 4 cases are being shared with you in an attempt to make it feel more personal. There is nothing preventing the use of their full names but  knowing that they may be used repeatedly as case examples in your classrooms, their last names were withheld.
Cooper K completed CNA training on 7/23/2016. He pleaded guilty on 5/29/2018 to the charge of Attempted Voyeurism by Electronic Equipment Concealed or Disguised, a Class A Misdemeanor for an incident that occurred 7/11/2017.
He used his cell phone to video a vulnerable adult using the toilet and shared it with his friends through Snapchat. He described how he stood at the resident’s side and purposely took the video because he thought it was funny.
The Cooper K case highlights that Snapchats do not disappear as completely as you might think.  He is on probation for 24 months and must do 20 hours of community service and pay all court costs.
Hollie G completed training in 2010. She agreed to a plea in abeyance on January 19, 2018 to the charges of Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult and the charge of Unlawful Acquisition/ Possess/Transfer-Card and Theft by Deception.
She stole medications and made numerous charges to a patients debit card.
She entered into a plea in abeyance and had to pay $2,068 restitution plus all court costs. She has to undergo substance abuse evaluation and treatment at her own expense. She will be tracked by the court until January 2020 and is subject to drug and alcohol testing at any time at her expense.
She cannot consume or possess any alcohol or other drugs or commit any crime during that time. If she fails the conditions of the plea she will then face her initial charges which included three 3rd degree felonies and three class A misdemeanors.
Victoria Z completed training 5/24/17. She stole and forged checks while providing in-home care for the victim.
She pleaded guilty to the charge of Attempted Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult in May of 2018.She served 2 days in jail, owes a $5,000 fine plus court costs, is ordered to take a Thinking Errors class and is on probation for 18 months.

Abuse Cases Continued Alana V completed training on 7/29/2015. While working as a CNA for a hospice she physically pulled and pushed a resident to the ground.
She pleaded guilty to the charge of Reckless Abuse or Neglect of a Vulnerable Adult, a Class A misdemeanor on June 26, 2018. She is on 18 months’ probation during which she can have no other violations, pay all court costs and a $1,000 Fine.  She must also attend anger management classes.

Students without SSN’s Each student must have a unique identifier and for all students except those without one, a social security number is what is required.
Students who do not have social security numbers are still allowed to test and become certified through UNAR. Whether or not they are hirable will depend on their unique situation and prevailing employment law. For those students, a Request for Unique Identifier must be completed and submitted to UNAR prior to test scheduling.

Former certified nurse takes plea deal after patient’s family records abuse of dementia patient

FARMINGTON, Utah, March 6, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A former certified nursing assistant accused of abusing elderly dementia patients in Clearfield has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.
Jason Harold Knox, 30, has pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated intentional abuse of a disabled or elderly adult, a second-degree felony.
i
A third identical charge was dismissed with prejudice, as was one count of aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult recklessly, a third-degree felony.
The dates of the offenses were given as Sept. 1, and Oct. 1 and 5 of 2018.
On Oct. 7, 2018, Clearfield police were dispatched to Chancellor Gardens, an assisted living center at 1425 S. 1500 East, a probable cause statement says.
“Officer T. Collings arrived. He was shown video by the family members of a resident identified as R.C.,” the statement says. “R.C. is a vulnerable adult who suffers from dementia. R.C. is housed in the memory-care unit of the facility.
“In the video, Officer Collings observed the suspect, Jason Knox, who
was formerly licensed as a certified nursing assistant and was employed at Chancellor Gardens, standing above the resident. In the videos, Jason Knox is observed in separate incidents physically assaulting the victim, elbowing and shoving the victim against the wall in a manner which does not appear consistent with health care.”
The video showed Knox striking R.C. with his elbow in a very forceful manner, the statement says.
“Officer Collings placed Jason Knox under arrest. After giving a Miranda warning to Jason Knox, Knox admitted to the described incidents with R.C., but also admitted that he engaged in aggressive behavior towards another resident, J.C., on two separate occasions by elbowing J.C. in the chest on approximately October 5 and October 6, 2018.”
In a third incident, Knox elbowed one of the men “then suddenly and with great force, drove his elbow into the man’s lower abdomen,” the statement said, noting that the patient let out a groan.
Knox is scheduled for sentencing on April 15.
