Notes from UNAR

Catheter Care Skill Many students are focusing solely on the catheter tubing when completing the catheter care skill and overlooking Step 7- Uses cleansing wipe to clean area around the resident’s urinary meatus. Stress to your students that there are 2 areas of focus in this skill for cleansing; first the urinary meatus and then the catheter tubing. Many also seem to overlook doing anything with positioning the tubing and making sure the drainage bag is secured to a non-movable part of the bed.
Abuse Cases UNAR recently received notice to place the following 4 individuals on the Abuse Registry. They are all on the abuse registry for life unless their case is overturned in a court of law, the finding was made in error, they are found not guilty in a court of law, or the State of Utah is notified of their death. This information is public record and may be shared with potential employers. Medicare/Medicaid certified nursing facilities are prohibited from ever employing them.
Details of these 4 cases are being shared with you in an attempt to make it feel more personal. There is nothing preventing the use of their full names but  knowing that they may be used repeatedly as case examples in your classrooms, their last names were withheld.

Students without SSN’s Each student must have a unique identifier and for all students except those without one, a social security number is what is required.
Students who do not have social security numbers are still allowed to test and become certified through UNAR. Whether or not they are hirable will depend on their unique situation and prevailing employment law. For those students, a Request for Unique Identifier must be completed and submitted to UNAR prior to test scheduling.
